I really struggled with Meditations before I got the Hayes translation. I don't feel that I lost anything by doing that but maybe I should go back to an older translation but it felt tedious to read.

The Hayes translation was the translation I read. I think that it is considered the best one available today. My comment was more related to reading Marcus himself first (in whatever translation) rather than a book *about* Marcus, like Robertson's, although I also liked Robertson's book. It just seems to me that people should read primary sources first. There's a lot of material about stoicism out there but the stoics themselves are pretty easy to understand.
